Going Thru Colossians -- Chapter 1.1 - 12

Since no one on the board mentioned working on it I decided to go thru Colossians searching for typos and blatant mistranslations. This post contains chapter 1.1 - 12.

Paul's Letter to the
Colossians

1

Introduction

From Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus, by the will of God, and from Timothy, also a follower of the Lord. 2  To Christ's people at Colossae — the followers who are faithful to him: May God, our Father, bless you and give you peace.

3  Whenever we pray<,>{{Note: Extraneous comma}} we never fail to thank God, the Father of our Lord<,>{{ Extraneous comma -- NRSV, CEB, NET, etc.}}  Jesus Christ, <about>[for] {{ More common usage}} you, 4  now that we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all his people, 5  because of the hope which <awaits its fulfillment>[is reserved for you] {{NET and note, HCSB, NABRE, CEB. Same idea in diff. words in most other versions}} in heaven. Of this hope you heard long ago in the true message of the good news which reached you <—>[,] {{I notice this TCNT translator overuses the dash. Comma seems more appropriate here}} 6  << B>[b]earing fruit and growing, as it does, through all the world, just as it did among you<,> from the very day that you heard of God's loving kindness, and understood what that loving kindness really is. 7  It is just what you learned from Epaphras, our dear fellow servant, who, as a minister of the Christ, faithfully represents us, 8  and who told us of the love with which the Spirit has inspired you.

<New paragraph following NRSV, CEB, REB, and others>

9  And therefore we, from the very day that we heard this, have never ceased praying for you, or asking that you may <possess that deeper knowledge of>[be filled with the knowledge of] {{1. "Possess" is an inadequate rendering; πληρωθητε means "may be filled (with)."  2. The concept of "possessing deeper knowledge" is not really there in Gk. and even as a very loose paraphrase seems misleading. I suggest replacing it with this, which is essentially how all the major versions read, NRSV, NET, NIV, HCSB, REB, etc.}} the will of God, which comes through all true spiritual wisdom and insight. 10  Then you will live lives worthy of the Master, and so please God in every way. Your lives will be fruitful in every kind of good action, and <your characters will grow through>[grow into]{{"Characters" is a gloss with no basis in Gk. Suggest replacing with this, which again follows the major translations.}} a fuller knowledge of God; 11  you will be made strong at all points with a strength worthy of the power manifested in his glory — strong to endure with patience, and even with gladness, whatever may happen to you; 12  and you will give thanks to the Father who made you fit to share the lot which awaits Christ's people in the realms of light.

I was just, today, working on these very same verses ...

Epistolary and Salutation

1:1* Paulos, an apostle of Yeshua Anointed through a will of God, and Timotheos the brother. 1:2* Unto the [ones] in Kolassai, sanctified and trusting brethren in Anointed: Grace unto you and peace from God, Father of us, and of Lord Yeshua Anointed.

Reports and messages by Epafras

1:3* We thank unto the God and Father of the Lord of us, Yeshua Anointed, always praying about you; 1:4* to the trust of you in Anointed Yeshua having heard, and to the love, the [love] for all the sanctified [ones], 1:5 through the expectation, the [expectation] being away-laid unto you among the heavens, to which an [expectation] you had before-heard in the word of the truth of the evangel; 1:6* of the [evangel] into you beside-being, also according-as in every [one], and unto the regulated-world it be fruit-bearing and being grown; also according-as among you, from which a day the grace of God you had heard, and you had recognized in truth; 1:7* according-as also you had learned from Epafras, the loveable together-slaved [one] of ours, which a [one] he be, a trustable servant of the Anointed over you, 1:8 the [servant], also, to the love of you having evidenced unto us, in spirit.

Paulos’ solicitude, and his prayers concerning their acknowledgment of the Secret

1:9 Through to this [matter] we also, from which a day we had heard, we cease not praying and requesting over you, so-that to the recognition of the will of Same, you should be fulfilled in every wisdom and spiritual intelligence; 1:10* you to about-walk worthily of the Lord, every [one] a pleasing [one], for’ every good work fruit-bearing in, and for’ the recognition of the God being grown; 1:11 in every power being empowered, according-to the might of the glory of Same; into every under-abiding, and long-temper with joy; 1:12* thanking unto the Father, unto the [Father], to us for’ the part of the allotment of the sanctified [ones], having fitted in the light; 1:13 which [One], to us He rescued out of the authority of the darkness, and into the kingdom of the love of the Son of Same, He had transferred; 1:14 in which [One], to the from-ransom, the remission of the failings, we hold; 1:15 which [One], a resemblance He be of the God, of the invisible [God]; firstborn of every creation, 1:16* that in Same there was created the all [things], the [things] among the heavens, and the [things] on the earth; the visible, and the invisible, if-besides thrones, if-besides lordships, if-besides preeminences’ if-besides authorities, through Same and for’ Same there has had been created the all [things]. 1:17 And Same, He be before all [ones]; and in Same, there has had together-stood the all [things]."      (~Robin)
