Hello!

nategreen

My name is Nate, and I'm a graphic designer from Northeast Ohio. I've been self-teaching front-end web development in my spare time, and stumbled across this project one day while searching for marked-up versions of the Bible. At some point, I would like to create (or find) a nice app and/or web app for Bible reading with awesome typography and options to turn all the extra stuff on/off, so you can just read without any extra help or reference info.

I don't have gobs of free time, but I would love to work with you guys if you need extra help with anything. I can proofread/edit pretty well, or do design-y things, or whatever. I'm familiar with MD and HTML and I learn new things pretty quickly so if there are tedious workflow kind of things to do I could probably handle that too.

Thanks! I have posted mostly illustration work on my Behance, but I have done and can do all kinds of design-related things. Do you know what part of this project I might be able to help with?

Hi Nate,
Thanks for the offer of help! There's probably a bunch of stuff you can help with.

We're also looking for "a nice app and/or web app for Bible reading with awesome typography and options to turn all the extra stuff on/off, so you can just read without any extra help or reference info"!  Especially the awesome typography.

I previously hacked together the reader at http://openenglishbible.org/oeb/2013.11/read/ and we've also used the more complicated web app at http://openenglishbible.org/oeb/2013.11/study/ which allows for some comparisons.

We don't have a good way at the moment to read the OEB on iPhone/iPad/other smart phones although the reader is at least a simple responsive design.

Any suggestions how to improve these might be a good use of your talents,
:) Russell

Hey, guys…haven't yet had a good chunk of time to actually *do* this but I haven't forgotten about it.

First of all, I downloaded the YouVersion bible app—think it's just called "Bible" in the App Store and it has a pretty lame icon—and I'm really impressed by it. So there's that. Still not as customizable as I'd like with regards to the typography, but as a reader and such it's nice.

Also, took a brief look around at the reader and web app you mentioned and short of a few personal-preference sort of things, I don't see anything glaringly *wrong* with them. :) For being "hacked together" they're actually pretty impressive! When I get a spare hour or two I'll try to take a deeper look and see if I can come up with some suggestions.

Well the default reader was hacked together by me - the web app was created by John Dwyer and isn’t a hack.

In fact I just noticed there is now a new version:

Live example at: http://inscript.org/study/

We should update our site to use this for our study version, I think!
