Links to Online Resources People Use for their Work here...Add your own!

This post was updated on .
For me, as someone who is not a formal translator, or who is fluent in Greeek (much less first century Greek) here are the tools I've found helpful.

Of course, starting with the OEB dev source:
http://openenglishbible.org/oeb/dev/

I often pull the text version into various word processing programs to help with grammar and spell checking...

But I also use the following online tools. Figured folks could post the online resources others find helpful too:

Greek to English Interlinear:
http://biblehub.com/interlinear/2_john/1.htm

Multiple English Bible Transltions at Bible Gateway:
(with a useful feature of being able to compare multiple translations easily:
http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=2%20John%201&version=VOICE;NET;ESV;NIV;HCSB

I've worked with some others but these are the ones that I keep coming back to on things here.

Any other tools or services? I do wish there were better ones for modern English grammar checking.

Very cool. I've been interested in his translation for a while.

My main resources are in Accordance (accordancebible.com)  They're not free but I've built them up over time rather than buying in one big lump and breaking my credit card...

Apart from various English translations, one particular thing I find useful is the UBS Translators Notes for the NT:

It's a bit pricy but quite detailed, and provides a lot of information not just on what a passage means, but on the various pitfalls in different ways of translating it.

One more resource online, is the Mounce New Testament Interlinear:

"The translation philosophy was to be sufficiently formal so it could function as an interlinear, but also as dynamic as possible to show students how to translate both words and meaning. Consequently, it sits between the ESV and NIV."

https://www.biblegateway.com/versions/Mounce-Reverse-Interlinear-New-Testament/

You can search for any verse and choose the Mounce translation to see the interlinear:

For instance:

Grammar is such a fluid thing. I sometimes get help with English-Spanish issues from WordReference.com, where there is a community of people struggling with translation issues, but in the end I always have to work it out for myself. Reading a lot and taking every chance to converse with strangers builds (stet) my grammatical muscles. Writing a lot (and revising) helps.

I try to remember, too, that every choice is a moral choice. If you read some of those blog posts they send you from LinkedIn, you'll notice that bad grammar and trendy, tacky vocabulary choices are a sure sign of a suck-up, "as well." Proverbs 17:20.

I think it might be a very good idea if someone (Tim?) were to put together a single email of these links to resources and sent it to the list say once a month? We can slowly grow it over time.

In terms of grammar, I’ve found hemmingwayapp.com to be helpful to concentrate my mind, although I wouldn’t slavishly rely on it unless we want to have the world’s most boring Bible translation :)

Very happy to... one tech note, I've only interacted with the list via the web interface to the discussion threads. Not sure technically HOW to send an email out to the whole group... but happy to learn.

Whatever you are doing is working :)
I think posts to the web forum automatically turn into emails to the mailing list, and vice-versa.

And the app that led me to the OEB...

http://simoncozens.github.io/tertius/

This thread gave me a great idea. I went to https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/more-bookmarks-toolbar/ and added a second toolbar. It is independent of the main bookmarks toolbar. I can show or hide it. I'm calling it the "Translation Productivity Toolbar."

New post for clarity.

I forgot some great resources.

There is CCEL, which is good for secondary sources like commentaries and devotional literature. It has markup capability (highlighting).

http://www.ccel.org

I often use 2 Letter Lookup as my electronic lexicon. It is good for comparing definitions on the fly and seeing word families. It uses Strong's as a base, and I think it gives you the abridged TWOT text (The print TWOT is probably my most-used resource). It also displays a photo scan of Gesenius. It links to Teknia for Greek. The author is a good resource.

http://2letterlookup.com

Crosswire / The Sword Project is a good open source Bible tool. It is comparable to the NET Bible Learning Tool.

http://crosswire.org/study

The Chabad (Lubavitch) community is a good resource for Hebrew study. Together with the JPS, that gives me two online versions of the Tanakh.

http://www.chabad.org/library/bible_cdo/aid/8165
http://www.taggedtanakh.org/Home/About#

I also use the Mechon-Mamre Hebrew Bible as my offline HTML version. It is the Aleppo Codex but it is very nicely formatted for reading in the browser.

Speaking of Bibles, I grew up on the RSV, so I use the online ESV (http://www.esvbible.org/Genesis+1) a lot. But that is changing :)

Let me also post the link to the World English Bible so I don't forget it.

http://ebible.org/

And finally, if I want to look at parallel translations, verse by verse, Bible Hub has a convenient layout. I usually just google the text of the verse, and they are the first or second link that comes up.
