Picking Up the Thread on Translating 1st Peter

Timchambers
We last left off a long while ago on the translation of first Peter 1:8-9.... (that seems to be the last one I did that was in discussion. After this I'll pick up with the next new bit of recommended changes.

OEB now:

8 Though you have never seen him, yet you love him; though you do not even now see him, yet you believe in him, and exalt with a triumphant happiness too great for words, 9 as you receive the reward of your faith in the salvation of your souls!

Tim's suggestion then:

"Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you are not seeing him now, you are still believing in him, and you rejoice, with a joy that is indescribable and glorious, for you are receiving the final achievement of your faith - the saving of your lives."

In the last thread (now locked because it's old) we discussed "achievement" maybe not the right word.

Since then we have also had the CSB translation:

8 Though you have not seen him, you love him; though not seeing him now, you believe in him, and you rejoice with inexpressible and glorious joy, 9 because you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls."

OK next new bit (and this is taking over from the old thread that is now locked):

The OEB currently reads this in 1 Peter 1:13-15:

Therefore concentrate your minds, with the strictest self-control, and fix your hopes on the blessing that is coming for you at the appearing of Jesus Christ.  Be like obedient children; do not let your lives be shaped by the passions which once swayed you in the days of your ignorance, but in your whole life show yourselves to be holy, after the pattern of the Holy One from whom you received your call.

Consider changing to:

Therefore ready your minds to act, be calm collected, and hope completely on the grace that will be brought to you at the revealling of Jesus Christ.  As obedient children, do not be conformed to the desires you used to have in your time of former ignorance, but as the one who called you is Holy, so also are you to be holy in all you do

The OEB in 1 Peter 1:16-21 reads:

"For scripture says –
‘You will be holy, because I am holy.’ 17 And since you call on him as ‘Father,’ who judges everyone impartially by what he has done, let respectful awe be the spirit of your lives during the time of your stay on earth. 18 For you know that it was not by perishable things, such as silver and gold, that you were ransomed from the aimless way of living which was handed down to you from your ancestors, 19 but by precious blood, as it were of a lamb, unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ. 20 Destined for this before the beginning of the world, he has been revealed in these last days for your sakes, 21 who, through him, are faithful to God who raised him from the dead and gave him honor, so that your faith and hope are now in God."

Consider changing to:

"For it is written:
‘Be holy, because I am holy.’ 17 And if you call on him as ‘Father,’ who judges impartially according to each one's acts, conduct yourself with reverence and awe, during the time of your exile and temporary residence. 18 For you know that you were ransomed by the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors - not by perishable things such as silver or gold, but by precious bloodshed, as by the lamb, unblemished and spotless. The bloodshed of Christ. 20 He was chosen in advance, before the first founding of the cosmos, but has been revealed in these last times for you. 21 Through him, you believe in God who raised him from the dead and gave him glory - so that your faith and hope are in God."
