Working Through Next Small Letter: 2rd John

This post was updated on .
Working through smaller books has been fun. I'll keep that going with 2nd John and will add the proposed changes to this thread.

In 2nd John 1:1-2 the OEB currently reads:

1 To an eminent Christian Lady, and to her children, from the church elder. I sincerely love you all, and not I only, but also all those who have learned to know the truth. 2 We love you for the sake of that truth which is always in our hearts; yes, and it will be ours for ever.

Consider changing it to:

The Elder, to the Lady chosen by God and to her children. I truly love you all - and not I only, but also all those who have known the truth - because of the truth, which lives in us and will be with us forever:

2nd John 1:3 reads:

Blessing, mercy, and peace will be ours — the gift of God, the Father, and of Jesus Christ, the Father's Son — in a life of truth and love.

Consider changing to:

Grace, mercy, and peace will be ours — the gift of God, the Father, and of Jesus Christ, the Father's own Son — in truth and love.

OEB for 2nd John 1:5 now reads:

And now, I pray you, Lady — not as though I were writing a new command for you; no, it is the command which we had from the first — Let us love one another.

Consider changing to:

And now I implore you, Dear Lady - not as if I were writing you a new command but one that we have had from the beginning - that we should love one another.

The OEB for 2nd John 1:6  reads:

This is the command as you learned from the first, to live in a spirit of love.

Consider changing this to:

This is the command - as you heard from the beginning - so that you should walk in it.

2nd John 1:7 in the OEB reads:

I say this because many impostors have left us to go into the world — people who do not acknowledge Jesus as Christ come in our human nature. It is that which marks someone as an impostor and an antichrist.

Consider changing to:

I say this because many deceivers have gone out into the world — those not admitting Jesus Christ coming in flesh and blood. Such a one is the deceiver and the antichrist.

Re: Working Through Next Small Letter: 2nd John

2nd John 1:8-10 currently read in the OEB:

Take care that you do not lose the fruit of all our work; rather, reap the benefit of it in full. 9 Everyone who goes beyond the limits of the teaching of the Christ has failed to find God; the person who keeps to that teaching — they have found both the Father and the Son.

Consider changing to:

Watch yourselves so that you do not lose the work which we have accomplished but rather, that we receive the due rewards in full. 9 Anyone who goes beyond and fails to live inside of the teaching of the Christ has not God. The one who does live inside that teaching — this one has both the Father and the Son.

The OEB 2nd John 1:10-11 currently reads:

If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive them into your house or welcome them; 11 for the person who welcomes them is sharing with them in his wicked work.

Consider changing to:

If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive them into your house or even welcome them, 11 for the person who welcomes them is sharing with them in his evil work.

OEB 2nd John 1:12-13 currently reads:

Though I have a great deal to say to you, I would rather not trust it to paper and ink, but I am hoping to come and see you, and to speak with you face to face, so that your joy may be complete. 13 The children of your eminent sister send you their greetings.

Consider changing to:

Though I have many other things to say to you, I would rather not use paper and ink, but I am hoping to come and see you, and to speak with you face to face, so that our joy may be complete. 13 The children of your sister, who is chosen by God, send you their greetings.
